Mizzou News for Wednesday, October 13
Mizzou just striving to be the best version of itself
First off, have you read Kortay’s press conference recap yet? If not, give it a read. While he focused mainly on this weekend’s game and how the team matches up with the Aggies, here’s some other highlights from the presser:
Before knocking off the no. 1 team in the country last week, Texas A&M was off to a slow start, much like the Tigers. However, Drinkwitz stressed that it’s important not to focus on how other teams are doing, or what they have in common (having both left the Big XII together 10 years ago). From the Columbia Tribune’s Eric Blum, who covered this in a new Tiger Extra piece:
“I try not to get into the ebbs and flows or comparisons,” Drinkwitz said. “The process is we’ve got to try to be 1-0 this week. You can’t get up and down because of every different thing that happens. Obviously our season has had some ups and downs, but we’ve got to try to maintain even keel. You can’t get too high or too low, can’t get into those emotional swings.”
Drinkwitz also talked about football (or – I’d argue – any high level sport), being something that will humble you. From Dave Matter, in regards to not only Mizzou’s struggles, but that of the Kansas City Chiefs:
This quote was part of a much longer answer about comparing Mizzou’s season to Texas A&M’s slow start (pre Alabama win.) Here’s more context https://t.co/mrAW3xP3uP pic.twitter.com/PhW24Rwtgd

And finally — we all asked and we got it, you guys. YAY! Defensive Coordinator Steve Wilks was back on the interview circuit on Tuesday, talking with reporters later in the afternoon. Here’s a couple of tidbits from Dave Matter, who got the scoop.
On what he was happy about in regards to the first half defense on Saturday:
Wilks said LB Chad Bailey did Saturday what he did in practice to earn the start: He shed blocks to make the tackle.

And on who will take over at CB now that Rake is out for the season with a torn ACL:
Wilks said Mizzou will take on a cornerback by committee approach with Ennis Rakestraw out. He likes freshman DJ Jackson but says he had some eye discipline mistakes Saturday. Says he’s got a high ceiling.

I love to read/listen to these press conferences later, as Drink and his staff typically does a great job of providing extra insight into the team’s preparation and performance in great quotes.

- On Tuesday in Mizzou Football history, this wild thing happened. NINETY-NINE times?!? In case you are having trouble recalling the year this occurred, the majority of you were not born yet— it was 1968.

- The people behind the @DataMizzou account are busy doing a statistical analysis on each of the new members of men’s hoops. Today they looked at Jarron “Boogie” Coleman.. I recommend checking out the entire thread on Coleman… there’s a few more tweets that go with it.
Coleman is at his best when playing with tempo, creating shots for teammates and getting open spot up opportunities. His plus size as a guard also allows for solid activity on the glass.
When on the ball, a stat comp of Dazon Ingram is close. Off the ball, Allen Flanigan fits.

- Mizzou Golf wraps up their at the SEC Match Play Championships. The Missourian staff recapped it. And according to MUTigers.com, here’s how it went:
As a team, Mizzou dropped its opening match to Tennessee 4-1 before bouncing back in pool play with a 4-1 victory over Auburn. Rounding out match play the Tigers fell in a tightly contested match-up with Kentucky 3.5-1.5 prior to a 4-1 loss against Mississippi State.
Mizzou in the Pros
- Sophie Cunningham and the Phoenix Mercury have a chance get a win tonight in Game Two of the WNBA Finals. You can watch the game on ESPN at 8pm. Sophie will be back in action — looks like they’ve wrapped her calf up pretty good — and the team will need her against a very confident and talented Chicago Sky team.
- Looks like Tilly’s NBA stay with the Orlando Magic was very short-lived. However, he is likely to sign with the Magic’s G-League team in Lakeland.
The Orlando Magic have released former #Mizzou men’s basketball standout Jeremiah Tilmon. This was likely the plan, as he is now likely to sign for the Lakeland Magic in the G League. @CoMoSports https://t.co/kJRfYSxf6K

- In regards to the Gruden disaster and his terrible comments about basically everyone, including former Tiger Michael Sam, Jeff Fisher shared this:

- The Mizzou contingent in the NBA was off on Tuesday, but most of the teams will be back on the court this evening as the Nuggets play the Thunder at 7pm (NBA League Pass, maybe) and the Jazz play the defending champion Bucks at 8pm (NBA TV).
