After a bit of a break, let’s catch up!
Learning from the best, Karen Steger, of course, welcome to my very own edition of an Olympic Sports Catch Up!
Like her, I’ve broken down each of the sports below and will be sharing recent results, fun/relevant info, upcoming matches, and any writing our talented crew has done. If there’s relevant social media posts or MU Tigers news, I’ll share that as well.
Because I cover golf, swim, soccer and tennis currently and am a Major League Baseball enthusiast, I will focus on those sports specifically.
Women’s Golf
- Ffion Tynan. The queen she is!
- The senior wrapped up her season at the NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, this past week
- Tynan landed her big to Regionals after landing inside the top-200 golfers in the NCAA at the end of the season
- It was the first individual NCAA regional bid since Jessica Yuen in 2021. Demonstrating just how phenomenal this season has been for the women’s team
- In the final round of the tournament, Tynan carded a six-over 78 to finish with a score of 230. She finished 55th overall
- This season, Tynan recorded three top-10 finishes, including her first top-five finish at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia
- She also led the Tigers with a stroke average of 73.83
- Her career average of 73.79 is the fourth best career mark in Mizzou history

Men’s Golf
- While the Tigers didn’t earn any individual or team nods to the NCAA Regionals, they aren’t walking away empty-handed this season
- The Tigers were awarded two postseason awards!
- Trent Mierl was awarded with SEC All-Freshman Team honors, and is the second Tiger since Mizzou joined the SEC to earn All-Freshman accolades
- He is also the first freshman to lead the team in stroke average during the team’s SEC era, posting an average of 72.39
- Demonstrating his talent, Mierl was honored with SEC Freshman of the Week twice this season
- Overall, the freshman collected three top-10 finishes
- Additionally, Bubba Chapman was named to the Community Service Team
- He was a team leader in service this season. According to an MUTigers press release, the freshman spent “a week during his winter break volunteering at a local middle school, putting on golf clinics during physical education classes.”

Two new signings were announced last week for the Missouri Tigers. In fact, both are transfers from Arizona State! Let’s get to know them!
Haiden Schoessel
- It’s a return to home for the Wildwood, Missouri native
- A four-time 50 free State Champion
- 2023 State Champion in the 100 free
- MSHSAA Class 1 & 2 State Record Holder in the 100 free

Quinlan Gould
- Hails from Happy Valley, Oregon
- State Champion in the 100 back
- Big 12 Championships finalist in the 200 free, 100 back and 200 back
- Oregon Class 6A State Record Holder in the 100 backstroke
- In his freshman year at Arizona State, Gould set a personal best in all three events noted above. His time in the 200 free sits at 1:37.32, a striking time of 1:41.70 in the 200 backstroke, and a time of 46.96 in the 100 backstroke.
- In comparison, he has a faster 200 backstroke than any Tiger, and is just shy of Grant Bochenski’s (45.34) personal best in the 100 backstroke (editor’s note: I love a fun fact)
Happy to have Quinlan Gould at the Zou ☺️

Soccer
Mizzou Soccer has finished up their spring soccer schedule. They’ve faced kansas, Missouri S&T, Southern Indiana, and Central Missouri, though there don’t appear to be any scores or stats available from these games.
However, Coach Golan has been awarding “Take the Stairs” winners after each game. The most recent recipient was Keegan Good who “[battled] through adversity early this season, Keegan has attacked the Spring with relentless tenacity and an unwavering drive to push herself and everyone around her to be better.” The prior week, it went to goalkeeper Kate Phillips for her performance against Central Missouri.

On the news front, the Tigers announced the signing of Autumn Jackson from O’Fallon, Missouri.

- She made two appearances in 2024 with 34 minutes logged. She had previously redshirted the 2023 season
- She was ranked the nation’s No. 41 defender nationally and No. 8 in the Heartland region by Top Drawer coming out of Fort Zumwalt West
- Per MUTigers, “In 2019, Jackson was a member of the ICC Midwest team that competed against FC Barcelona, PSG and several other teams. Jackson helped guide the program to the ICC Futures Trophy Division title. In addition, she attended the Youth National Team Kansas City Training Identification Center.”
Baseball
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS IN SEASON!!
With the season now here, it’s time for me to nerd out for a second. Perhaps my new favorite addition of the Olympic Sports Update: “Rory nerds out of over baseball”.
Let’s check in on the four alums around the league!
Pete Fairbanks (Tampa Bay Rays): Through 16.1 innings, the relief pitcher has posted a 1.65 ERA and recorded three wins and a loss. He has struck out 15 and walked only eight batters.
Kameron Misner (Tampa Bay Rays): Through 104 at-bats this season, Misner is hitting .260 with three home runs, seven doubles and a triple. He has recorded eleven RBIs, maintaining success at the plate.
Tanner Houck (Boston Red Sox): After a strong start to the season, Houck has a had a rough go. In his last outing, the right-hander only lasted 2.1 innings, allowing 11 earned runs, three walks, and nine hits. His ERA now sits at 8.04.
Max Scherzer (Toronto Blue Jays): In the offseason, Scherzer signed a one-year, 15 million dollar contract with the Blue Jays. Injuries have plagued the starter for seasons, and he was placed on the injured list after just three innings in his debut this year.
But let’s get back to Mizzou baseball…
MIRACLES CAN HAPPEN!!! YOUR MIZZOU TIGERS HAVE NOT ONLY WON A CONFERENCE BASEBALL GAME, BUT ALSO SWEPT THE SERIES AGAINST THE TEXAS A&M AGGIES
Coming in at 0-24 in the SEC, the Tigers completed the sweep of a lifetime against the Aggies. A&M is now the first preseason No. 1 to not make the NCAA Tournament in at least 35 years.
For a time that has battled constant injuries this season, it is sweet, sweet victory.
Read all about the first win in the link above!
Next Up: Mizzou will wrap up the regular season against Mississippi State at home from May 15-17.
Majority Rules
- A very special of Majority Rules is here! Our very own Abigail Klapatauskas is just days away from graduation, and we would be remiss not to mention all the wonderful coverage she has done about track in her time at Mizzou. The group also gives Mizzou Athletics an overall grade for the year. As usual, the crew also shares Olympic sports from around the diamond, hardwood, mats and green. Thanks for tuning in!
