The Morning Commute for Wednesday, May 14th
Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about something I had not paid attention to previously – rules changes for college football in the upcoming 2025 season.
A check of the interwebs shows that a handful of approved changes by the NCAA will be in effect this fall.
The highest profile change addresses the newer “art” of faking injuries that Ole Miss has gotten so adept at in recent years, among other changes. Specifically, a timeout will be charged if a player presents as injured after the ball is spotted. Other issues related to timeouts in overtime, replay review procedures and other various implementations should help improve things.
Here’s a more detailed look at some of the most prominent rules adjustments:
- Fake Injury Timeout:
If a player appears injured after the ball is spotted, the team will be charged a timeout. If they have no timeouts, a delay-of-game penalty will be assessed.
- Overtime Timeout:
Starting with the third overtime, teams will have only one timeout for the rest of the game, regardless of how many overtime periods are played.
- Replay Review Announcements:
The terms “confirmed” and “stands” will be removed, and referees will announce replay decisions as either “upheld” or “overturned”.
- Punt Formation:
No offensive player can be directly in the line of the snap to the punter.
- Kickoff Return Signal:
If any player on the kickoff return team makes a “T” signal, the play is stopped, and the team loses the right to return the kick.
- Defensive Signals:
The terms “move” and “stem” will be reserved for defensive players and cannot be used by the offense to simulate offensive snap cadence.
- Twelve Men on the Field:
A 5-yard penalty will be assessed if the defense has 12 or more players on the field in the final two minutes of either half.

It’s an FCS team. You should win, and win easily, and get your freshmen in as soon as possible to burn one of the four games they get during their redshirt season. Missouri will be breaking in a ton of new pieces on offense but should still outclass the Bears up and down the roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. If you don’t see any of the non-starting freshmen in the second half, something has gone terribly wrong. The Tigers need to take this time to get some experience, iron out any issues they still have, and create some early momentum before they play their most hated rival and then their SEC portion of the schedule…
In the article, Nate details the plethora of upsets over the years that have taken place with FCS teams defeating FBS teams. Even with all of the new faces on the field this fall for the Fighting Drinks, it’s still hard to feel too stressed about this one…
Senior Golfer Ffion Tynan wrapped up her season at the NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, this past week. Tynan landed her big to Regionals after landing inside the top-200 golfers in the NCAA at the end of the season. It was the first individual NCAA regional bid since Jessica Yuen in 2021. Demonstrating just how phenomenal this season has been for the women’s team
Mizzou Basketball was well-represented over the weekend at the NBA’s G-League Elite Camp. Former Tigers Tamar Bates and Caleb Grill both impressed scouts in hopes of making an NBA roster in the near future…
