SEC Coach’s Comment On ‘Horns Down’ Is Going Viral

July 23, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Appalachian State head coach Eliah Drinkwitz, who is now an SEC coach at Missouri.

Yesterday’s SEC Media Days proceedings were taken over by the report that Oklahoma and Texas have reached out about membership in the league. That talk has obviously leaked into today’s press conferences, where it promises to be a constant theme.

After Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle broke the news, others have started piecing things together as well. AL.com’s John Talty says the two Big 12 powers have started putting things in motion to leave the league, with the SEC being the “desired landing place.”

Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz is currently at the podium answering questions at Media Days. He opened the session in an incredibly appropriate manner, with a quick dig at his potential future-conference mate.

At Big 12 Media Days, a major theme was the controversial decision to make the “Horns Down” gesture, used to mock Texas at games, a penalty. Drinkwitz said he asked SEC commissioner Greg Sankey if that would come over to the SEC as well.

Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz: “(The big question) from yesterday is ‘Horns down’ gonna be a 15-yard penalty in the SEC? I asked Commissioner Sankey and he said ‘no comment.”

If Texas thinks it is unfairly picked on in games with its current Big 12 rivals, wait until it makes the jump to the SEC, which has many of the most ruthless fan bases, and toughest teams, in all of college football. One has to imagine the SEC would be less willing to play ball with UT over the really ridiculous “Horns Down” issue.

While it seems like we’re at the very start of process here, SEC Network hasn’t been afraid to mock up what a new 16-team SEC might look like. This morning, they proposed a four pods with four teams each. In the proposal, Missouri would find itself with Arkansas, and former Big 12 rivals Oklahoma and Texas.

We’ll have more on this potentially explosive move as it comes.
