The Morning Commute for June 9, 2025.
Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about the House Settlement.
On Friday afternoon, the college sports world officially changed when the House Settlement, the multi-billion antitrust settlement against the NCAA and defendant conferences, was officially approved by a federal judge. It clears the way for schools to begin paying their players as soon as this year. And while it’s much, much more complicated than that, we don’t necessarily have the time (here, at least) to dig into it anymore.
We do know, however, that Mizzou is ready to welcome this new world. On Sunday, Athletic Director Laird Veatch sent out a public letter declaring as much:
As we’ve shared with you previously, our Mizzou Athletics staff has spent the past year preparing for this outcome, and while we recognize the operational shifts this requires, we are approaching the new era with a sense of purpose and optimism.
With that, I want to double down on one crucial point: At Mizzou, we see this moment as an opportunity. This is a pivotal time to reaffirm our commitment to invest in what drives competitive success and embrace the innovation that’s necessary for us to thrive at the highest level.
We’ll be covering this a bit on this week’s Before the Box Score, as well as tracking what it could mean for Mizzou’s Olympic sports.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
- This isn’t the usual thing we’d share here at Rock M, but it feels pertinent to point out that Mizzou Wrestling great Ben Askren is reportedly hospitalized with severe pneumonia and is “unable to respond to anything” according to his wife.
If you’re a prayer, a well-wisher, a vibes sender, be doing all of it for Ben.
This isn’t a quote, but an affirmation that there seriously isn’t a piece of Mizzou news that Karen hasn’t linked to in the above post.
Forreal!
- Over at Rock M+, Watkins is pitching a special post with House Settlement insight. Tune in to see what every one is pitching back!
