Game Thread: Mizzou vs. Texas A&M

October 16, 2021 by Rock M Nation Leave a Comment

The Aggies come to town fresh off the biggest win of the Jimbo Fisher era, can Mizzou right the ship with a huge upset win?

Mizzou 14 | Texas A&M 35

Final

First Quarter Notes

  • Texas A&M wins the toss and defers to the second half.
  • Promising opening drive from Mizzou gets stalled by an illegal shift, and Bazelak proceeds to throw an interception off of an overthrow.
  • Zach Calzada went through his progressions on a 3rd and goal to give the Aggies an early 7-0 lead.
  • The Tigers go 3-and-out on their next drive, were tempted to go for it on 4th and 1 but a false start shut down any notion of that.
  • Isaiah Spiller has two long runs in which he was untouched at the line of scrimmage to extend the lead to 14-0.
  • Ground game is really struggling for the Tigers thus far, that vaunted Aggie D-line is winning with ease.
  • Pass interference extended the next TAMU drive on 3rd down, and the Aggies would just pound the ball down the field to capitalize and extend the lead.
  • Michael Cox had the most positive offensive play for the Tigers up to this point, running for a 22-yard gain from the goal line. However, right after, Bazelak threw another interception to give the ball back to A&M in Mizzou territory.
  • Run game was nonexistent, and without anything to lean on, Bazelak looked clearly rattled. Combine that with no separation from receivers and a run defense that was not even getting a hand on Spiller or Achane, and the score at the end of one makes sense.

Second Quarter Notes

  • Chris Turner down on the field for a while after his leg was rolled up on.
  • Seth Small misses a 54-yard field goal to give the Missouri defense their first stop of the day.
  • Another penalty, this time a holding call, halts a promising Missouri drive.
  • A clutch 3rd down conversion to JJ Hester and a pass interference call allowed Tyler Badie to finally find a lane and score on the next Tiger drive.
  • Penalties, penalties, penalties. Mizzou continues to bail Texas A&M out in key moments.
  • Calzada throws a nice ball in the red zone to bring the lead back to 21.
  • Bazelak appears to be hobbling after being dragged down on a 3rd down play.
  • A Jaylon Carlies interception gives Missouri a chance to score late in the half. Tigers instead opt to let the clock run out, and receive plenty of boos for doing so while leaving the field.
  • Same old, same old. Bazelak looks uncomfortable, and the run defense is being diced up. To make matters worse, other than his touchdown run, Tyler Badie has not had a run of over five yards.

3rd Quarter Notes

  • Mizzou gets a much-needed stop coming out of the halftime break.
  • Offense responds in suit, with Bazelak getting into a rhythm and Badie finding some holes. Dominic Lovett took an end-around into the end zone to cut the Aggie lead to 14.
  • Tigers had a chance to get a key stop on 2nd and 27, but a holding and a breakdown in coverage extended the drive. Devon Achane would punch it in for the Aggies.
  • Mizzou would mount a drive that would ultimately stall out after a questionable 3rd and 9 run play.

4th Quarter Notes

  • The Tigers constructed another solid drive but could not sustain it when TAMU began to get consistent pressure on Bazelak when he dropped back to pass.
  • The 4th quarter would dwindle away as TAMU ran the clock out and Missouri could not mount any sort of threatening drive.
