The Morning Commute for Friday, July 4th, 2025
Welcome to the Morning Commute
Happy July 4th, everyone!

I don’t necessarily consider myself a big fan of this holiday. Not that I don’t appreciate the whole founding of our country thing, that’s great! Also I enjoy good bar-b-q, a fun parade, cold beverages and all that sort of stuff. Rewatching Jaws and ID4 is good stuff as well. Mostly I don’t look forward to the fourth because I’m a dog owner. I don’t particularly enjoy the way the independent celebrations happen all around us. Things would be a lot better if there were no fireworks… or celebratory gunfire. Anything that makes loud bangs (if we could get thunderstorms to stop as well that’d be great).
July is typically a slow month news wise for College Sports. So we’ll be spending our time reminiscing and previewing and anything that we can do to keep the flow of content going.
So I’m going to enjoy this long weekend. Feel blessed that the corporate day off happens on a Friday so I can have a full long weekend. And hopefully keep Georgia, our dog who hates the booms, occupied enough to get some rest.
But for everyone else here, don’t blow your fingers off, or any other body part. If you’re at the lake, enjoy the boats or water skis or wave runners or what have you. Enjoy some hot dogs or burgers or whatever is on the grill and maybe skip the low bang-y stuff for the sake of the pets nearby.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
- I love that True Deck, our new recruiting writer, is diving head first into the resets and this headline rocks:
Height has started to become a clear priority for the future of Mizzou football as the team received a commitment from three-star wide receiver Devyon Hill-Lomax who comes in at 6’5 (per Rivals and Hudl) — the tallest for a Missouri wide receiver since Keke Chism (6’5) during the 2021 season.
I like Hill-Lomax. This could miss but why not swing on developing a big, fast, tall, high jumping athlete.
- Josh provided the updates for the Reacts question on where Mizzou should focus in on in recruiting:
Recruiting is heating up around Columbia, with Eli Drinkwitz and staff adding more than a recruit per week since the middle of May. That being said, there’s still quite a bit of work to do: Mizzou’s class currently ranks 15th out of 16 SEC teams and has the second fewest commitments in the conference. There’s plenty of room for guys to join the upward trajectory of Tiger football.
This has been one of the weirder recruiting cycles I can remember since Drink has been around. There aren’t many high profile recruits in the current class, there aren’t many high profile recruitments either. Mizzou is kind of just flying under the radar. It’s odd.
Ahead of the 2025 season, Mizzou soccer head coach Stefanie Golan has completely changed the look of her support staff with two new hirings and one promotion. Former assistant Kelsey Wys was promoted to associate head coach, Renee Horton was brought in as an additional associate head coach, and Austen Parker was added as an assistant.
I think it says a lot about a coach who is willing to reorganize. Most coaches are very loyal to those who have been supporting them along the way, but it’s a good thing to see a coach look at their program and find changes. Not necessarily for the sake of change but in searching for improvement. That part remains to be seen, but from the outside these looks like a solid restructuring.
- Over at Rock M+, we’re talking about Live shows! And more, obviously. But some big news is we have new streaming software support from Fans First Sport Network and it’s got all kinds of fun bells and whistles that we’re just beginning to learn.
Plus True has been keeping track of all the recruiting stuff with Football, and he’s been knocking it out of the park so far.
