Commute: Former Mizzou Assistant Rob Summers Named Head Coach at Cleveland State, Other News and Notes

Today we’re talking about coaches and players leaving.

After spending one season as an assistant coach with Mizzou under Dennis Gates, Rob Summers has landed a head coaching job. He is returning to Cleveland State, the program officially announced on Wednesday.

Here’s a look at the impact Summers made at Mizzou while on the staff:

Elsewhere, Josh Gray has entered the transfer portal (wait, he doesn’t have any eligibility left though?) On the women’s side, so has De’Myla Brown (same thought process applies…)

And Mizzou Football’s Jahkai Lang has reportedly entered the transfer portal. While Missouri is currently stacked at this position, Sam Snelling notes on RockM+ that it’s unfortunate to lose an in-state product.

But a classy comment here from edge rushers coach Brian Early.

“I’m coming at this one without the benefit of hard data, so bear with me if my perception isn’t backed by proof, but now that the NCAA Tournament has concluded, I thought it was one of the better ones in recent years, despite the lack of upsets.”

Would have been a tad better if Mizzou didn’t lose in the first round.

“While Tims’ commitment is exciting enough on it’s own merits (he could have a very successful career as a Tiger), it’s perhaps even more exciting to know that the Florida-to-Columbia pipeline remains open and productive.”

“Tyler is familiar with success, playing at powerhouse Incarnate Word Academy during high school. She finished her high school career with two state titles and was voted the St. Louis Post Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year as a senior.”

“Meanwhile, Mizzou’s next opponent (Florida) only has one SEC win coming into this series. It has been a disastrous season for the Gators as well especially by their program standards.”

A combined 1-23 SEC record between Mizzou and Florida in this upcoming series. Yikes.

“Lang has three years of eligibility remaining and totaled 14 tackles and three sacks in 12 games last season. Lang was ranked by Rivals as the No. 16 player in Missouri and No. 31 defensive end in the country as a recruit in the Class of 2023. Lang redshirted in 2023.”

“Reminder— you must have a winning record to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. In order to make the tourney, the Tigers need to win 8 of their last 13 games to finish above .500. And that needs to happen with 12 against four different top-20 teams in the RPI. So no pressure.”
