You made need the hard stuff for this one.
It’s always fun to seek out beers from in or near the home city of Mizzou’s opponents. It adds a little something to the game experience in my book. Sometimes, though, things get out of sync. As I detailed in last week’s post, I drank the perfect beer for this week then. If you find yourself in Athens, by all means visit Creature Comforts and have yourself a Tropicalia.
This week, although, may call for something a little stronger. Mizzou is deservedly a giant underdog against top-ranked Georgia, so I am going to veer from the beer and recommend two mixed drinks, which will be the signature cocktails at ArtGirl’s wedding later today.
The first is an Irish Mule, or as the bride and groom refer to it, Party in a Glass. It consists of 2 ounces of Irish whisky, 6 ounces of ginger beer, and lime juice. You can garnish with a lime slice and/or a mint sprig if you are feeling fancy.
The second is a Pomegranate Vodka Gimlet. It consists of 2 ounces vodka, 1½ ounces pomegranate juice, and lime juice. Garnish it with 2-3 thinly sliced lime rounds and 2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds.
As a plurality of the wedding party are Wake Forest graduates, at noon ET the TV in the wedding suite will be tuned to the Wake-UNC game. As you might expect, they are pumped about their top 10 team. I will be in and out, but I imagine I will see more of that game than the Mizzou game. Depending on how things go, the TV may end up on that game in my room as well.
As for food, there will be bagels and chicken minis early and then a lovely sandwich platter for lunch to tide us over until the reception.
kristina is also doing wedding things
So, first off, greetings from AlaTiger’s state! …………aw, look another 11am kick-off time. I guess, barring something insane, we’ll have to try the “kristina doesn’t watch the Georgia game and Mizzou wins” routine again. If I’m around a tv, I’ll turn it on, but no idea on the plans for Saturday at this point. Either way, I figure it’ll be a mimosa morning, game or no, with my soon-to-be-married friend and her mom hanging around, and they’re not exactly sports fans. (Read that as not at all.) Maybe I can convince the group to go out to lunch or something. Then again, do I really want to watch this?
Karen Remembers Fonder Times
In honor of a game in the great state of Georgia, I would be doing the state a big injustice if I didn’t drink my most favorite brew, Sweetwater Blue, of Sweetwater Brewing Company in Atlanta, GA, while watching Mizzou get blown off the field. I’m pretty sure I have referenced this particular beverage before, as I always get really, really, realllllyyyyy excited when I happen to find it at Macadoodles.
As for its description, I am going to “borrow” a description from Beer Advocate, as I’m just not that good at describing what I’m drinking. Karen’s description: It’s delightful and light and has a slight blueberry taste to it. It’s the color of normal beer, which I think is important to mention. While my dad criticizes my love of “fruit beer,” I feel like this is on the lighter side of “fruit beer” and I could get him to like it. If this style isn’t your thing, I’ll also recommend the 420, which is an extra hoppy IPA…. Also delicious, and much more readily available around the country.
Here’s the Beer Advocate description: “The Aroma is toasted wheat malt with a whiff of blueberry. Taste is a light blueberry cap over the crisp wheat ale. Wheat malt in the aftertaste. Fizzy mouth feel. Very good carbonation.” This is better, right? Oh, and it’s 4.7% ABV, so it won’t knock your socks off alcohol-wise with just one.
This beer distinctly reminds me of my old home in the Charlotte, NC area where I first tried it. And given that I spent eight years drinking this delightful beer, when I get to have it now, which isn’t often enough, I am transported back to my old life attending Charlotte Oktoberfest and trying wayyyyyy too many delicious brews, including several fill ups of this particular variety, chomping on pretzel necklaces, and just having the best time with my friends.
