Chilly weather and rain in the forecast causes a rethink

I had planned to tell you which crappy stadium beer I’d be drinking while sitting in the stands for the game, but as the rain in Saturday’s forecast kept expanding and the temperature kept dropping, I decided to punt. This decision, while prudent, has left me in a beer bind, as all I have are leftovers I’ve discussed previously and the beer I know I’ll be drinking next weekend.

As I’ll be at an event with multiple excellent options then, I’ll go on and crack the six pack of Creature Comforts Tropicalia. This is an excellent beer which is far and away my favorite IPA. It’s citrusy and balanced with a pleasant bitterness on the backend instead of hop hammering you like some IPAs. Also, at 6.6% ABV, you can have a couple of them over the course of the game with reasonable pacing without hurting yourself. It’s brewed in Athens, so it’s ideal for next week’s inevitable dismemberment, but I’ll have some today as well.

On the food front, I’ll be making a big pot of chicken vegetable soup, with lots of carrots, celery, and onion, which seems ideal for a chilly rainy day.

Josh goes full Fall with a well-named stout

It’s officially been “fall” for about a month now, but it’s just now starting to feel like fall here in the mountains, so it’s time to transition to something a little heavier (which helps because how can you watch Mizzou Football without a stiff drink?) One of my favorite breweries, Fonta Flora, recently put out a caramel apple stout called Seasonal Creep which I haven’t had a chance to partake in yet. However, watching Mizzou return to the football field seems like the perfect opportunity.

Mizzou is back in action and they might actually win this one! It’s Halloween weekend so I recommend finding a good pumpkin beer to enjoy this week. A good spiced Dunkel or a Pumpkin Pie Stout should be the starting point in your search for a seasonal companion as Mizzou looks to get back in the win column and stay out of the SEC Cellar.

So it’s the day before Halloween, and I mean, Mizzou versus Vandy might be a better horror show than anything else on at the time, right? Too soon? I do like the kickoff time at least, as the afternoon is about the only free spot in my day. Honestly, considering Vandy ruined a good half of us in the survivor pool, and their basketball court sucks, can we win this one? I do have a possibly later than a semi-old person like myself wants to have night, so I’ll probably go easy for the game and go either a mimosa, or depending if a friend comes over, she’ll bring some seltzers. Honestly, I don’t understand the seltzer craze, but I’m not opposed to having one once in a while. The brand escapes me right now (is white claw really better than any of the others) but the black cherry one is pretty legit. Hopefully that’ll be just enough to motivate me for an evening outdoor Halloween event. ‘Cause if the weather is anything like it’s been, MEH.

Karen Tries Pecan Beer

I had a friend reach out to me about heading to Logboat this weekend to try one of their new beers on tap, and I mentioned my need to also watch the Vandy game for the site and for my own fun, so we compromised and will just watch it there! The new beer we’ll be trying? A collaboration with local delicious pie place, Peggy Jean’s Pies! According to their IG, Peggy Jean Porter is inspired by Peggy Jean’s Pies’ traditional Southern Pecan pie, and is a “7.5% ABV porter, rich with notes of brown sugar, vanilla, and pecans. It’s decadent, nutty aroma and fluffy mouthfeel elevate this beer to the next level of deliciousness.” Dear readers/drinkers, I’m not sure if I’ll like this one or not, as I’m not a super fan of pecan pie, but I’m definitely willing to give it a try. I’ll do it for Peggy Jean!

Should that not work out, I’ll likely switch to High Tide, a delicious 5.5% ABV American wheat ale brewed with Citra hops, bitter orange peel, and Valencia orange zest… or my tried and true, Dark Matter Porter, a 6.6% ABV wheat porter that has dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavors and always reminds me of Post-Dispatch writer, Dave Matter, who I like to remind has this beer clearly named after him.

What I definitely won’t be drinking if the Peggy Jean Porter isn’t my thing? The Stormin’ Norman Golden Ale. Y’all, that beer is NOT good. I’m sorry. I love Norm and rushed to have some right after it came out, and I don’t know if it’s because I don’t really care for pilsners or beers of this style, but yech…. I finished the one I had like Norm would want me to, but I did not have another. The friend I was with couldn’t even finish his! So yeah… we’re hoping this collab is better than the last, and we can pair our Mizzou ass-kickery with a delicious dessert drink.
