The Viva El Birdos Podcast: Episode 30 Draft preview!

July 13, 2025 by Viva El Birdos

Welcome to Draft weekend Cardinals nation!

If you don’t keep up with the whispers across the league in terms of draft speculation and fun-don’t worry! We have you covered and will be sure you are the most prepared fan for the upcoming draft on night one! The St. Louis Cardinals hold picks number 5, 55, 72, and 89 on night one of the 2025 MLB draft. They have a bonus pool of 14,238,300 to work from and will be ready to strike, most likely, once they know what direction Seattle will go at number 3.

Kareem Haq, who writes for Cardinalsprospects.com and co-host of Birds on the Farm along with Director of Pro Scouting for Prospects Live – MiLB Scouting, Dynasty, MLB Draft & Cards Rhys B. White are just the men to have you ready for Sunday night.

The other 3 picks ahead of the Cardinals seem to be gaining some serious clarity as it’s expected Kade Anderson of LSU will be taken number 1 overall by the Washington Nationals. The Los Angeles Angels have the 2nd pick and in recent seasons they’ve been very college heavy with an emphasis on player who can move through their system quickly if not almost directly to the big leagues. In recent seasons they’ve selected Christian Moore, Nolan Schanuel, Zach Neto, and last seasons 2nd round pick Ryan Johnson made the opening day roster before throwing a pitch in the minor leagues. The name that’s most hot and heavy associated is Liam Doyle of Tennesse as someone who the Angels could theoretically place in their bullpen the day he signs his contract.

The Mariners appear to be where the first fork of the draft will occur. There is potential for Seattle to take Seth Hernandez who may have the highest upside in this draft as a prep righty starter out of Corona, California. But, Seattle must weigh that decision as his demographic tends to offer the highest level of volatility, historically. Florida State left hander Jamie Arnold is another arm who has been linked very strongly in pre-draft discussions around the league as the 3rd of the top lefty college trio in this class. Oregon State shortstop Aiva Arquette is another name as the consensus top college bat in this draft. Kyson Witherspoon out of Oklahoma is the other name being mentioned here as a potential below slot deal but would still net Seattle a polished right-handed starter with prototypical starters build and workload who can carry velo late into games.

The Colorado Rockies hold the final pick before the Cardinals are forced to make a franchise altering decision at number 5. The Rockies are likely to take prep shortstop Ethan Holliday. This is the “worst kept secret” of the draft as the allure of drafting former franchise player Matt Holliday’s son. Ethan, features high end raw power that mirror’s Matt’s. Unlike older brother, Jackson, who’s more of pure hitter and Ethan is more power over hit.

Who will the Cardinals take at 5 and who could be other names to keep an eye on in the draft? Listen to our episode to find out what our insiders know and how they think the draft could develop as well as some players to know as the night goes on!
