A series preview
Hey! The St. Louis Cardinals are playing the Milwaukee Brewers again! These two teams faced each other just a few weeks ago. The Cardinals were swept that series and have gone 6-8 since with six of those losses from the past eight games. It has been a rough stretch lately for el Birdos. Let’s just look at the dang pitching matchups.
Thursday, May 9 at 6:40 pm CT: Sonny Gray vs. Tobias Myers
On Thursday the Cardinals face 25-year-old rookie Tobias Meyers. He has only thrown 209 pitches in his major league career in a total of 13 innings pitched. He has primarily thrown fastballs in the form of a four seamer and cutter and has mixed in a slider, changeup, and curveball. His four-seamer sits around 92-93 and has had good results so far while the cutter has been hit pretty hard. It has had a tendency to drift over the middle of the plate at times. The four-seamer sits up at the top of the zone, changing the eye-level with his breaking and offspeed pitches.
Friday, May 10 at 7:10 pm CT: TBD vs. TBD
Saturday, May 11 at 6:15 pm CT: Kyle Gibson vs. Freddy Peralta
No starters have been announced for Friday, but on Saturday the Cardinals face Freddy Peralta again. His last outing against the Cardinals was a strong one: he pitched six scoreless innings with four hits, seven strikeouts, and two walks. His best pitch in the past few seasons has far and away been his four seamer, but so far in 2024 his slider has been his most successful pitch per Baseball Savant’s run value. He also throws a changeup and a curveball.
Sunday, May 12 at 1:10 pm CT: Bryse Wilson vs. TBD
Sunday’s starter is Bryse Wilson. He has a 2.40 ERA this season, but it doesn’t look like that will hold up long term. That ERA is suppressed by an unsustainable 90.2% LOB rate and .194 BABIP. He strikes out a modest 23.5% of batters while walking 8.7%. His FIP seems a better measure of true ability at 4.29. He throws a sinker and cutter about evenly and mixes in a curveball, four seamer, and changeup.
