ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals are trading veteran relief pitcher Phil Maton to the Texas Rangers, according to multiple media reports.
It appears the Cardinals and Rangers finalized a deal within the final 10 minutes of this year’s trade deadline. ESPN’s Jeff Passan and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal were among the first to report the deal.
Two minor-league prospects are expected to head to the Cardinals in the deal, according to The Athletic, though they have not been announced as of 5 p.m. CT.
Maton has a 1-3 record with a 2.35 ERA over 40 games pitched with the Cardinals this season. The Rangers will be Maton’s seventh team over nine MLB seasons.
For the Cardinals, he trade deadline featured just three trades involving pending free agents, but all largely anticipated: Maton, Steven Matz to the Boston Red Sox and Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets.
The 2025 MLB trade deadline has officially passed as of 5 p.m. CT Thursday.
