Cardinals 1B carries the offense during a rather lackluster week of baseball
Going 1-6 against the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Brewers this week was not an ideal outcome for the St. Louis Cardinals, to say the least. There were few bright spots on the offense and the team in general. One player who seemed to stand above the rest and contribute to the Cardinals being competitive in most contests was Willson Contreras.
In 7 games last week Willson went 8-23 with a slash line .348/.500/.696 with a 1.196 OPS including 2 2B, 2 HR and 7 RBI while striking out 6 times to 4 walks. Drawing from an old hockey term, it seemed like Willson was “dragging his teammates into the fight,” figuratively and literally as he made some very strong comments after Saturday night’s contest. He publicly called out an unnamed player (Rhys Hoskins) who took exception to a rather benign play occurring earlier in the game involving Contreras and teammate Caleb Durbin.
The Cardinals will look to right the ship against the lowly White Sox and the suddenly surging Cincinati Reds before one of the most anticipated contests against longtime rivals the Chicago Cubs next weekend at Busch Stadium.
