Lin-Manuel Miranda’s next film to focus on retired Cardinals player and his brothers

April 29, 2025 by KTVI - Fox2

ST. LOUIS – From “In the Heights” and “Hamilton,” musical producer, actor, and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda has his next film in the works—which will focus on one of St. Louis’ beloved professional athletes.

In a recent interview, Miranda shared that he is working on a movie about the Molina brothers—José, Bengie, and Yadier.

The trio is from the hometown of Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, which is where Miranda’s father is from.

All three went on to play baseball professionally in the MLB. José played for the Yankees and Rays as a catcher, and Bengie was another catcher for the Rangers, Giants, Jays, and Angels.

And of course, Yadier spent his entire career as a catcher since 2004 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Vega Alta is home to like an appalling number of Major League Baseball players, not just the Molina brothers, Bernie Williams, it’s really incredible. So to be able to honor that in the movie is something we’re really actively trying to do,” Miranda said. “We claim (the brothers), we claim them for Vega Alta.”

An article from MLB deemed Yadier as “the most successful Molina brother,” after claiming nine Gold Gloves, four Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger, and two World Series titles during his career before retiring from the majors in 2022.

No information regarding the film has been released beyond Miranda’s quick announcement, but he emphasized his priority when it comes to highlighting people’s stories.

“Every time I’m at bat, every time I’m at my piano, or at my computer, I’m trying to get us up on stage. I’m trying to write great parts that I would want to play, so in turn, I create a lot of wonderful roles for Latino actors and I feel very proud of that,” Miranda added.
