THE FUTURE, MARTY!!!!
On Monday Major League Baseball announced the American and National League rosters for the 2025 MLB Futures All-Star Game, and Cardinals No. 1 prospect JJ Wetherholt got the tap to represent St. Louis.
The 26th edition of the Futures Game will include 31 of the current top-100 prospects in the MiLB (17 from NL teams, 14 from AL teams) and Wetherholt is the 27th Springfield Cardinal to represent St. Louis at the event. It’s also the ninth consecutive year Springfield’s had a member make the team: Quinn Matthews went in 2024, Think Hence in 2023, and Masyn Winn and Jordan Walker both earned the honor in 2022.
Wetherholt, the No. 7 overall pick in 2024, is having a great first half for Springfield, slashing .305/.430/.453 through the first 57 games of the Texas League season. Wetherholt’s had an even better month of June, batting .356 with 15 runs, 26 hits, 19 walks drawn, and an on-pace percentage of .500.
The Futures Game always provides star power and this year’s edition is no different. Nine of the top-22 prospects will be participating, led by San Diego shortstop Leo De Vries who is the No. 3 overall prospect. Other future stars on the NL side include Philadelphia RHP Andrew Painter (No. 5), Milwaukee INF Jesús Made (No. 18), Colorado 1B/OF Charlie Condon (No. 22); as for the AL roster, the team is led by three Detroit studs: OF Max Clark (No. 7), shortstop Kevin McGonigle (No. 21), and catcher/1B Josue Briceño (No. 73). And I’m of course obligated to shoutout my beloved former LSU Tigers: lefty pitcher Gage Jump (No. 96 overall, No. 1 prospect for the A’s) and third basemen Tommy White (No. 6 for the A’s) will both be representing the A’s in Atlanta.
The 2025 All-Star Futures Game will be played at 3:00 P.M. CT on Saturday July 12 at Truist Park. The game will be on MLB Network and also simulcast on MLB.com, MLB.TV, and the MLB Network app.
