Game Preview 6/12: Cardinals vs. Brewers

The Cardinals look to bounce back against a rolling Brewers team.

Well, that last series sure sucked. It was encouraging in some ways, but there’s no way to be very positive about getting swept. The Cardinals ran into a red hot team and the offense made the games closer than they could have been. The Brewers went on a winning streak somewhat recently, but they are not currently that hot of a team. They have won 5 of their last 10, and have lost back-to-back series to the Padres and Braves.

But this is a new series and with the new series comes a new pitcher, Jacob Misiorowski. He is the Brewers 2nd best prospect, according to Fangraphs, and the 27th best in baseball. They give him a 70 grade fastball and a 60 grade curveball with an average cutter. They do not think he has that much command however. Which is fair enough, he had a 12.3 BB% in AAA and that’s actually low for him. He has struck out 31% of batters to pair with that walk rate. Projection systems are not that high on him, with a mid-4.00 FIPs across the board. Hopefully they’re right.

How to watch: FanDuel Sports Midwest

How to listen: 1120AM KMOX/104.1FM

First pitch: 6:40 PM CDT

Matchup:

Sonny Gray (3.35 ERA/3.12 FIP/3.06 xFIP)

vs.

Jacob Misiorowski (2.13 ERA/3.40 FIP/3.75 xFIP – AAA numbers)

Players to Watch

STL – Nolan Gorman – Gorman unfortunately went 0 for 4 yesterday with three strikeouts – he faced a lefty in three of his plate appearances. But since May 26th, Gorman has a 211 wRC+ with two homers in 29 PAs. He has managed to raise his season wRC+ from the doldrums up to 91. Again, yesterday dropped that down as he was approaching 100 entering the game. Hopefully, he can keep being hot against a rookie pitcher.

MIL – Jackson Chourio – Chourio is having a bit of an underwhelming sophomore campaign thanks to a shocking lack of patience. He swings at 42.5% of pitches out of the zone and has a 3.3 BB%. He has hit Sonny Gray well. He is 3 for 8 – no walks of course – with two doubles. However four of the five outs are strikeouts. So he is almost literally hit or miss against Gray.
