Cardinals look to even up the series in Baltimore
Yesterday was disappointing. Although I’m not sure the Cardinals had quite the favorable pitching matchup that it at first seemed. I don’t know if that makes you feel better. It’s an explanation. Today, well it’s two somewhat similar pitchers. Andre Pallante gets more groundballs (way more), but walks more (way more). Neither Sugano or Pallante really strike many hitters out. This is where you hope the bats show up.
Interestingly, today will be missing two of the Orioles better players. Adley Rutschman is day-to-day after taking a foul ball to the mask on Sunday. And Cedric Mullins is out for the second straight game against a right-handed pitcher as well. This is not injury-related but rest-related. Brendan Donovan has hip tightness so he’s not in the lineup for the Cardinals.

Todays matchup:

vs.
Tomoyuki Sugano (3.07 ERA/4.81 FIP/4.44 xFIP)
Players to Watch
STL: Nolan Gorman: Due to minor injuries to other players, Gorman is getting a start for the second straight game. Yesterday, he had two hard hit singles and managed not to strike out. Today, he’s facing a pitcher who doesn’t strike many out. It is, on paper, a good matchup for him. But these crafty veteran pitchers sometimes can be harder to square up than you’d think.
BAL: Dylan Carlson: Well, we caught Carlson at the wrong time He’s now hit homers in back-to-back games and I kind of think the willingness to sit Mullins tonight specifically is because Carlson is seeing the ball well. His season stats are still pretty bad, but if you catch a hitter when he’s out, the season numbers don’t matter. Let’s hope he has no answers for Pallante.
