Dodgers Acquire Infielder And Relief Pitcher in Three-Team Trade

July 30, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Bob Nightengale reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring infielder Tommy Edman and starting pitcher Michael Kopech in a three-team deal with the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals. In return, the Dodgers will send infielder-outfielder Miguel Vargas and prospects Alexander Albertus and Jerald Perez to the White Sox. Meanwhile, the Cardinals will receive Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham from Chicago.

Dodgers Acquire Infielder And Relief Pitcher in Three-Team Trade

Due to off-season wrist surgery, Tommy Edman has not played a game in the Majors this year. Unfortunately, he also sprained his ankle during rehab. Dodgers hope Edman will solidify third base heading into October as Max Muncy is not recovering from a strained oblique. Muncy, who has been out since May, has no timetable for a return this year.

Michael Kopech, a right-handed starter, will shore up a weary and worn Dodger bullpen that has been responsible for many innings in recent weeks. He has a 4.74 earned run average, 59 strikeouts, and 9 saves in 43 games.

Diamonds In The Rough?

In Miguel Vargas, the White Sox receive a bat that has shown power and promise at times. Vargas has platooned in the infield and outfield but would be better suited as a designated hitter.

Albertus and Perez, who are also going to Chicago, are reportedly top-30 prospects in the Dodgers organization.

The Cardinal Haul

Tommy Pham, the once-and-future Cardinal, has been one of the most-circulated and most coveted names in the trade market. He has proven he can hit in the playoffs and play reliable defense.

Fedde bolsters the Red-Bird rotation as well. He has a 3.11 ERA in 121 2/3 innings pitched and is signed through 2025.

While the White Sox are looking to the future beyond 2024, the Dodgers and Cardinals are shoring up their rosters for October.
