PITTSBURGH – The St. Louis Cardinals were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday and shut out in all three games, marking the first time in nearly a decade the Cardinals have gone scoreless across an entire series.
The Cardinals lost 7-0 on Monday, 1-0 on Tuesday and 5-0 on Wednesday.
The Cardinals had a combined 17 hits in the series and went 2-for-23 with runners in scoring position during the series.
The Cardinals fall to 47-41 after the three-game sweep. In the series just before, the Cardinals swept the Cleveland Guardians on the road and shut them out twice, holding the Guardians scoreless in all but one inning of the series.
The Cardinals began the week in Wild Card positioning, but have slipped out of the National League’s third Wild Card spot for the moment being, passed by the San Diego Padres.
Up next for the Cardinals, a three-game road series with the Chicago Cubs that begins on the Fourth of July.
