Cardinals Star Sets Sights on Select Trade Destinations

December 12, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

St. Louis Cardinals star player Nolan Arenado has named six teams for a potential trade. John Denton of MLB.com reports these teams are the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Angels. It’s uncertain if this list is exclusive or if Arenado would consider other teams as well.

Nolan Arenado Trims List of Preferred Trade Spots

The MLB Winter Meetings have started in Dallas, and trade talks involving Arenado are heating up. The Cardinals’ president of baseball operations mentioned that he intends to explore trading Arenado, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. Several teams have shown interest in the future Hall of Famer. Arenado’s contract has three years and $74 million left, but it includes a full no-trade clause. Arenado must personally waive this clause for any trade to happen. His agent, Joel Wolfe, has consistently stated that Arenado wants to play for a contending team.

Joel Wolfe, Nolan Arenado’s agent: “The Cardinals are motivated (to trade). Nolan is willing to strongly consider it … but he’s not going to go just anywhere.”

What does Arenado want? “A team that he thinks is going to win now & consistently for the remainder of his career.”

A native of Newport Beach, California, Arenado has expressed interest before in playing for a Southern California team. This would explain the presence of the Angels on his list, although they are, in all likelihood, not a contending team in 2025. While the Dodgers would be an appealing option, both in their ability to contend and to take on Arenado’s remaining contract, they have publicly stated that Max Muncy will be their Opening Day third baseman for 2025.

Arenado has said that he is willing to switch positions to make a trade to a contender work.

As a trade involving Arenado might be imminent, it is currently likely that one of these six teams will be involved.
