Utah Hockey Club Unveils Mammoth as Team’s Permanent Identity

May 8, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL Rumours

It is finally official, the Utah Hockey Club is no more. After a yearlong process, the team announced Wednesday morning that the new name and identity for the franchise is the Utah Mammoth. It is named after the large animal that last roamed during the Ice Age thousands of years ago.

Utah Hockey Club Releases Mammoth as Team’s New Identity

It has been a long time coming for the Utah franchise. After Smith Entertainment Group purchased all assets from the then Arizona Coyotes, the team relocated to Utah. Since then, the team has grown in popularity around Utah, nearly selling out every home game.

The new name replaces its predecessor, which acted as a placeholder until a permanent one was found. The Utah organization held a fan vote during its 2024-2025 inaugural season. After fans casted nearly 900,000 ballots, the Mammoth name was officially chosen. There was even a chance Hockey Club could have stayed as the team’s name.

During the search for new names, there was even copyright drama. Utah wanted to add Yeti to the list of potential team names the fans would vote on. However, it was deemed they were not permitted to use the name. So, Utah had to change course, adding Wasatch to the list. It did not stay on the ballot long though, as the fans were not enthused with it. So, the final choices were Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth, and Utah Outlaws. Mammoth won the final vote.

Mammoth Jerseys and Logos

Along with the name, the official team jerseys and logos were also unveiled. The Mammoth will use the same color scheme as the Hockey Club. The main difference is the new Mammoth logo, which will be featured on the front of the black home jersey. The away jersey will keep the same diagonal “Utah” text that was used during the inaugural season. Online purchases for Mammoth merchandise will begin on May 14, on the NHL shop.

With a new name, the organization will try to build off this season’s success and push to make the playoffs next year. Utah was close and fell just short, but expect next year to be different. Certainly exciting times in Utah. Tusks up is the new call for Utah fans.
