San Jose Sharks Add Another Defenceman

July 5, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

On Thursday, the San Jose Sharks added Dmitry Orlov to improve their defensive core. The team is not done yet, however. They have added another defenceman, this time via the waiver wire. Nick Leddy is joining the Sharks after being claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

Leddy played in 31 games for the Blues last season, recording five points. The Blues defensive depth has been growing, leading to Leddy seeing a limited role for the upcoming season. The Blues and Leddy attempted to find a trade partner, but were successful. The next step was placing Leddy on waivers, which the Blues did on Wednesday.

By claiming Leddy, the Sharks are taking on Leddy’s $4 million cap hit, which comes off the Blues book. Furthermore, it also helps clear the logjam in the Blues defensive group.

Role with the Sharks

Leddy will bring experience to the Sharks defensive core alongside Orlov and John Klingberg. Leddy’s partner is unclear. As a left-handed shot, Leddy could be paired with the right-handed Klingberg. That decision, however, may not be decided until training camp and/or the preseason.

Potential Trade Chip

While Leddy provides veteran experience and leadership to the Sharks, it is possible the defenceman may not spend the entire season in San Jose.

Leddy could be used as a trade chip should the Sharks look to add draft capital for the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Leddy will likely not get them a huge haul in return, but anything would be better than nothing. As a former Stanley Cup Champion, Leddy does have experience in the playoffs, something a contending team may see as valuable.

Win-Win

This is a win-win situation for Leddy. He is joining a team where he will get more playing time. In addition, he will also be paid the $4 million he is owed on his contract.
