NHL Rumours: What’s Next for Connor McDavid Extension Talks

August 25, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

It’s time for some more NHL rumours. The wait from the start of free agency to the start of training camp is a hard one. However, we’re fast approaching the big day when players arrive for conditioning. Players won’t just be focused on getting into shape, but a number of them will be getting ready to talk about contract extensions. There are a number of big-time players that are eligible to get new deals. However, there’s one superstar in particular that the hockey world is waiting on.

This edition of NHL rumours deals with the latest regarding the Connor McDavid contract talks with the Edmonton Oilers.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

What’s the Latest Between Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently did a summer edition of his 32 Thoughts podcast. The topic of McDavid’s possible extension was broached and the insider has a possible idea on when a deal could happen.

Analysis: The McDavid extension has been a major subject to the hockey world as a while. Edmonton’s all-world player was eligible to sign an extension as of July 1. However, it wasn’t likely that was going to commit so quickly. McDavid mentioned that he would take a wait-and-see approach in the off-season.

That chatter did make a small segment of Edmonton fans nervous. However, it always seemed likely that McDavid was going to re-sign with the team. Previous editions of NHL rumours have speculated on the length of McDavid’s deal. We’ve seen insiders discuss that the Oilers’ captain could sign a mid-range deal instead of a seven or eight-year pact.

Another recent edition of NHL Rumours talked about what McDavid could take for a cap number. Many think that he will be getting at least $15 million with this next agreement. However, insider John Shannon speculated that McDavid could take a team-friendly contract.

What It Means

Let’s circle back to Friedman and when a possible deal could be signed. Friedman said that a deal could get over the line between Olympic camp and the start of Oilers’ camp next month. The insider mentions that sides want to get a deal done and worry about other things later.

There is precedent for the Oilers getting major deals done in early September. Last season, the Leon Draisaitl contract extension was the major item on general manager Stan Bowman’s list. The German superstar and the Oilers came to an eight-year agreement that will see him getting $14 million this season.

It’s not a stretch that Edmonton could do the same thing for McDavid. This would be a great way to cut off any chatter that the former first overall pick could leave Alberta after the season. McDavid and the Oilers can get down to the business of trying to finally hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1990.

The McDavid deal will likely cause the other dominoes like Kirill Kaprizov, Jack Eichel and Adrian Kempe to fall. However, the hockey world is still waiting for the day to finally happen.
