This report from the Daily Herald cites two sources that the 34-year-old may hang up the skates at the end of the season. Toews has struggled with Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and long-COVID. The Blackhawks captain had been a part of trade rumours before shutting down for the rest of the regular season. According to the Daily Herald, the Blackhawks had made plans to move on from the veteran pivot. Chicago was planning on honouring its captain at the team’s last home game on April 13 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Impact of a Jonathan Toews Retirement
Toews would almost certainly be a Hall of Famer being one of the key cogs of the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup winners. However, there are some questions surrounding him and his legacy with the ugliness due to the Kyle Beach situation. There’s no doubt Toews led the way on the ice, but the other issues could be a heading.
The Blackhawks centre would leave with 1,060 career NHL regular-season games and has recorded 371 goals and 509 assists for 880 points. He was also a Conn Smythe winner and a Selke Trophy winner in his time with Chicago.
