NHL Rumours: Chicago Blackhawks Centre Future in Doubt

March 20, 2023 by Last Word On Hockey

Jonathan Toews retirement

It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours to start your week. We’re closing in on the end of the regular season and there were some seismic moves at the trade deadline. However, there could be some more shocking news coming in the off-season. The Chicago Blackhawks are one team that already made big moves in trading future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane. Could another pillar of the Blackhawks decade of greatness in the 2010s be gone? Today’s NHL rumours takes a look at a possible Jonathan Toews retirement.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Is a Jonathan Toews Retirement Possible?

Rumour: The Fourth Period cites a report from the Chicago Daily Herald that the Winnipeg native is seriously considering retirement. This report from the Daily Herald cites two sources that the 34-year-old may hang up the skates at the end of the season. Toews has struggled with Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and long-COVID. That also kept him out of the entire 2021-22 season.

The Blackhawks captain had been a part of trade rumours before shutting down for the rest of the regular season. According to the Daily Herald, the Blackhawks had made plans to move on from the veteran pivot. Chicago was planning on honouring its captain at the team’s last home game on April 13 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Impact of a Jonathan Toews Retirement

Toews would almost certainly be a Hall of Famer being one of the key cogs of the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup winners. However, there are some questions surrounding him and his legacy with the ugliness due to the Kyle Beach situation. There’s no doubt Toews led the way on the ice, but the other issues could be a heading.

The Blackhawks centre would leave with 1,060 career NHL regular-season games and has recorded 371 goals and 509 assists for 880 points. He was also a Conn Smythe winner and a Selke Trophy winner in his time with Chicago.
