NHL Predictions St. Louis Blues vs New York Rangers
Time: 7:00 P.M. EST
How to Watch: FanDuel Sports Network Midwest, MSG 2, NHLN
2024-2025 Season Series: Blues 2-0-0
2025-2026 Season Series: 0-0-0
With the holidays fast approaching, the New York Rangers are hoping that brings some good fortune to their home ice woes. Meanwhile, the Blues are looking to carry their momentum through Madison Square Garden and feast on the poor play of the Rangers at home.
Both of these teams are desperately trying to claim points. They both currently sit outside of the Wild Card Stanley Cup playoff line. Though they are 4-2-4 in their last ten games, the Blues still sit five points out. The Rangers, with only one home win all year, are miraculously only three points outside of the playoffs.
These two teams are no strangers with each other, even though they only see each other twice a season. The managers have pulled off a number of large trades in just the last five years. 2021 saw the Blues acquire Pavel Buchnevich from the Rangers. Two years later, the Blues sent star Vladimir Tarasenko to New York in what became the start of a rebuild for St. Louis.
Finally In the Win Column
After losing the last three out of four games in overtime or a shootout, the Blues finally remembered what it was like to win a hockey game. Jordan Binnington stood on his head against the New York Islanders Saturday afternoon.
Speaking of the game Saturday, St. Louis almost surrendered another two goal lead. This is something they have simply done too much this season. Most recently, it happened three times in the last week. Coach Jim Montgomery likes the play of his team but still can’t seem to find a way to get his team to finish a full 60 minute hockey game.
Pavel Buchnevich and Brayden Schenn have heard the chatter around their names. On Saturday, they found themselves back on the scoresheet, and less than a minute into the game. Buchnevich is still looking for that elusive goal of late, but was able to add a helper on the goal scored by the captain. Jordan Kyrou worked his way onto the scoresheet again as well, earning an assist on Pius Suter’s sixth of the year. It certainly helped that Jordan Binnington played like his spot on Team Canada’s Olympic roster was on the line.
Home Cooking For the Holidays
The Rangers are hoping that the upcoming holiday this week means their home woes will be a thing of the past. In their Centennial Anniversary Season, the Rangers set an NHL record early and not in a good way. The New York Rangers became the first team to ever be shut out in their first three home games.
To add insult to injury, the Rangers have an anemic 1-7-1 home record.
The only reason that the Rangers are not at the bottom of the league and fishing for the first-overall pick in this summer’s draft is because of their play on the road. The Los Angeles Kings are the only other team in the league that also have nine wins away from home. If they are able to get even a fraction of the consistency at home that they have on the road, the Rangers will certainly find themselves right back in the mix of playoff contention.
Prediction:
Both of these teams need the points. The Blues are feeling great and playing…okay. The Rangers have lost four straight games, three of which on the road where they are supposed to dominate. This feels like a must win for New York.
Now that the dust of the offer sheets for Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg has settled, they seem to be able to relax and just play hockey. Their play has been key in all three zones for the Blues on this road trip, which has helped the Blues get points in three straight. Plus having Broberg on the back end with big Colton Parayko will cause headaches for any team.
Mika Zibanejad has five points in the last five games and 20 overall for the Rangers. Former Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox sits right behind him with 19. They also have proven talent in net, as long as both goalies play like they’ve shown they can.
Prediction: Blues win 5-3.
Prop Bets:
The books have the over/under at 5.5 goals in the game. With a Blues 5-3 predicted win, we will be taking the over at -108. It’s hard to ignore just how good his play has been of late, so we are going to take Broberg at +1000 to get an anytime goal for the Blues. In regards to the Rangers, it’s hard not to think Artemi Panarin will remain off of the scoresheet, so we’ll take him with a goal at +160.
