The Calder Trophy nominees for this year are Matty Beniers, Owen Power, and Stuart Skinner. Each player was a huge bright spot for their respective teams. There is so much about these players that makes them the perfect candidate for the rookie of the year.

Stuart Skinner

Stuart Skinner of the @EdmontonOilers topped rookie goaltenders in wins (29) and games played (50) while ranking second among qualifying rookies (min. 25 GP) in goals-against average (2.75) and save percentage (.914). #NHLAwards#NHLStats: https://t.co/lwasirOqMW pic.twitter.com/1G9IKC3wGI

When the club went on to sign Jack Campbell, signs pointed to him taking the crease. That did not end up happening and Skinner has held the fort down as the bonafide starter. Skinner went on to finish this season with a 2.75 goals against average, a .913 save percentage, and 6.8 goals saved above expected. Aside from the McDavid and Draisaitl show, Skinner was a bright spot in the lineup. Among rookie goalies, he was among the best.

Matty Beniers

Beniers has been among the favourites to win the thing entirely. The rookie centre has been an integral part of the Seattle Kraken. Beniers skated in 80 games this season. He went on to post 24 goals, 33 assists, and 57 points. His points were good for fourth on the team. He has taken the steps to being the franchise centre and deserving of this award.

Owen Power

A lot of the attention in Buffalo is surrounded around Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin. But rookie defenseman Owen Power has been good for the club in his first full season. He went on to score four goals and 35 points. This led all rookie defensemen which is great for him. Power had time on the power play notching eight assists. The rookie standout has been great for an up-and-coming Buffalo team.
