Montreal Canadiens Depth Forward Signed

June 2, 2023 by Last Word On Hockey

Michael Pezzetta signed

The Montreal Canadiens have inked one of their forwards to a new contract. Montreal announced that they have gotten forward Michael Pezzetta signed to a two-year contract extension. The deal is for two years and carries an annual cap hit of $812,500 per season. News of the contract signing broke early Friday morning. This deal will run through the end of the 2024-25 season and is a one-way contract.

Michael Pezzetta Signed for Two More Years

Pezzetta has played parts of two seasons with the Canadiens. This season he supplied seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 63 games. However, he was more of a physical player with a team-high 239 hits and 77 penalty minutes. The Toronto has 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 114 career games. Montreal drafted the 25-year-old in the sixth round, 160th overall of the 2016 NHL Draft.

The forward played his major junior hockey with the Sudbury Wolves and the Sarnia Sting. He netted 23 goals in the 2017-18 season with the Wolves and the Sting. Pezzetta has played in the ECHL with Maine and was part of the Laval Rocket since the 2019-20 season. Goals haven’t been a huge part of his game in the pros, but has been willing to be physical and can drop the gloves.

What Michael Pezzetta Getting Signed Means

This wasn’t the contract extension Habs fans were wanting to wake up to. Many were hoping the management would have reached a deal with pending restricted free agent Cole Caufield. However, Pezzetta’s signing should be a welcome one.

The young forward may not light up the scoreboard, but he does serve a purpose. He’s likely locked himself into the bottom six of a young and promising Montreal lineup. He’s willing to go into the dirty areas and lay the body into someone. Pezzetta has good size at being 6-foot-1-inch and 210 pounds. He has a purpose in the Canadiens’ lineup.
